The Housewife

Did you know that my eyes turn yellow when I’m in heat?

That I speak Dutch in my sleep?

That I like the taste of chipped glass in my Bourbon?

Did you even know that I drink Bourbon?

Well, only when I’m truly happy

A happiness, perilous to us both if truly unleashed

I needed something constant.

In this constancy I found you. More proper. More accepted.

I nod my head and sip dull wine, but occasionally …occasionally

I burn my finger while making your dinner just so I can feel something.

  • I love this!
I like that it is directed at 'someone'
someone who wouldn't know that you drink bourbon, because you only do when you're happy, suggesting you're not happy when with this someone...

"happiness is perilous"....thus, you and this 'someone' remain in a tame, and stable relationship...but ultimately boring.

But the best part of it all is the ending:

"I burn my finger while making your dinner just so I can feel something."

It sums it all up so well...in all this stability, there is no passion or spark...you'd probably rather be burned by that, but that's not safe, no?

security and safety are not all they're cracked up to be--eh?

wonderful, simple and to the point...kudos
  • I enjoy the structure of this -- it reminds me of the way I write sometimes.

And I have to agree with Laurel in that the last line is AMAZING. It really just punches you in the stomach.

I only have one problem, just that the line "In this constancy I found you" feels kind of awkward to me...maybe it just isn't something I would say.

    Fantastic.
